Demystifying Solar Energy: How Does It Work?

So, buckle up and get ready for an enlightening ride as we explore the ins and outs of how solar energy works. Now, let's break down the process of converting sunlight into electricity:

1.Absorption: When sunlight hits the PV cells, photons (particles of light) transfer their energy to the electrons in the semiconductor material.

2.Separation: This energy transfer causes the electrons to break free from their atoms, creating a flow of electrons (aka electric current).

3.Collection: The PV cell has an electric field that directs the flow of electrons, and metal contacts on the top and bottom layers of the cell collect the electrons, creating a circuit.

4.Conversion: Finally, an inverter converts the direct current (DC) produced by the PV cell into alternating current (AC), which is the type of electricity used by most households and appliances.

Now that we've covered the basics let's look at a real-world example. Imagine you're a homeowner who wants to reduce your carbon footprint and save money on your electricity bill. You decide to install solar panels on your roof. Here's what happens:

1.Your solar panels, made up of multiple PV cells, absorb sunlight and generate DC electricity.

2.The inverter converts the DC electricity into AC electricity, which powers your home.

3.Any excess electricity your panels generate can be fed back into the grid, earning you credits on your utility bill. This is known as net metering.

4.On cloudy days or at night, when your solar panels aren't producing enough electricity, you can draw power from the grid to meet your energy needs.
